da Vinci Robotic Surgical System

Within the walls of Marian Regional Medical Center’s operating room number seven is a technological breakthrough that is redefining surgery: the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System. Marian instituted its Robotic Surgery Program in 2011, utilizing the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System’s leading-edge technology for performing minimally-invasive procedures. Since the program’s inception, two new urologic surgeons have joined Marian’s fleet of highly experienced da Vinci trained surgeons: Samuel Kieley, MD, and Brett Lebed, MD.

Both Dr. Kieley and Dr. Lebed are board-certified in urology and come to Marian from prestigious medical institutions. Dr. Kieley specializes in urologic oncology while Dr. Lebed is the only surgeon in the region specializing in female pelvic reconstruction. In addition to being fellowship-trained, these surgeons have a wealth of experience performing minimally-invasive urologic procedures. In fact, in their training alone each surgeon performed hundreds of robotic cases. “

As a urologic surgeon, the revolutionary da Vinci technology is a great advantage since it allows for a minimally-invasive approach with extreme precision, meaning smaller incisions, less pain, minimal blood loss, and overall a faster, more pleasant recovery for patients,” explains Dr. Kieley.

With a magnified 3D HD vision system and tiny wristed instruments, the da Vinci® Si Surgical System enables surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, accuracy, and control. The dexterity of the human hand is limited; however, the da Vinci’s wristed instruments can bend and rotate to far greater degrees than is humanly possible.

Dr. Lebed adds, “In all, my patients are extremely pleased following da Vinci surgery. They are able to resume their daily activities just one week following surgery, but ultimately the da Vinci Surgical System allows patients to feel as if they have been given their lives back.”
