Exercise for Hope

In a recent analysis conducted by the National Cancer Institute of 45 studies that examined the relationship between physical activity and mortality among cancer survivors, there was a statistically significant reduction in mortality among physically active survivors. The evidence is mounting that exercise and mindful meditation therapies improve physiological factors such as body weight, body mass index, blood sugar control, oxygen consumption, walking distance, lower limb strength and hand grip strength. Psychologically fit patients have less depression and fatigue, improved sleep and overall they have improved quality of life.

Marian Cancer Care is pleased to offer a variety of free classes every weekday to help cancer patients and their caregivers reclaim their lives. Our classes are different from those offered in a “health club” environment because each of our sessions is led by an expert who has the knowledge and experience to safely work with people who are in cancer related treatments or have recently ended treatment. Participants always work at their own pace to achieve goals that are right for them. At the same time, they have the opportunity to forge friendships and bond with those in similar situations.

Mondays

Walking into Wellness
Walking on a regular basis improves your overall health. Added benefits for cancer patients include reduced symptoms of fatigue, muscle weakness and nausea.

Cancer Rehabilitation
An individualized 12-week program that includes group, strengthening and aquatic exercise with our Certified Exercise Trainer.

Tuesdays

Lymphedema Prevention Exercise
Therapeutic exercise class designed for breast cancer survivors and those battling chronic conditions.

Wednesdays

Fight Against Falls Exercise Class
Those with neuropathy or muscle fatigue may benefit from this exercise class as participants work on conditioning their muscles to help battle muscle fatigue and reduce the risk of falls around the house.

Learn Golf
Golf professionals use three holes of the golf course to teach the game in an enjoyable, stress free manner.

Resorative Yoga
Restorative yoga is a therapeutic style of yoga which utilizes props—such as blocks, bolsters, blankets and straps—to make it easier for the body to get into certain poses.
