From beginning to end, Mission Hope Radiation Oncology will utilize the most advanced equipment and techniques to bring truly state of the art treatments to patients on the Central Coast. The radiation therapy process will begin with tumor identification and treatment simulation utilizing the most advanced GE Computed Tomography (CT) or Positron Emission Tomography/ Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanners. Using these scanners, physicians will be able to quickly and accurately identify tumors to be treated, as well as healthy tissues to be avoided. In addition to the highest quality images available today, these scanners will also provide Mission Hope physicians with the ability to target movement in a technique called 4 Dimensional Computed Tomography (4DCT). Using this information, Mission Hope staff will be able to provide a treatment plan and delivery technique that will more effectively target the tumor while avoiding healthy tissues. These scanners will also allow physicians to define treatment volumes at the time of scan, which increases treatment accuracy and reduces the time from planning to treatment.
Mission Hope Cancer Center will utilize the most advanced treatment planning system and most accurate dose calculation algorithms to develop the best possible treatment plan for each patient. Our highly-trained staff will use the latest version of the Varian Eclipse treatment planning system using its advanced Acuros XB™ dose calculation algorithm. The combination of this treatment planning system, and the 4DCT images provided by the GE scanners, will provide physicians with the information required to determine how best to treat the tumor, while minimizing dose to the surrounding healthy tissue.
In order to deliver these advanced plans, Mission Hope Cancer Center is pleased to introduce to the Central Coast the Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator. This is the first accelerator of its type in the area and is the world’s most advance medical linear accelerator. When coupled with the advanced imaging and treatment-planning capabilities offered by Mission Hope, the TrueBeam will allow patients the type of advanced treatments typically available only in large research institutions. The TrueBeam is able to deliver the state-of-the-art Varian RapidArc™ and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) treatment techniques, as well as respiratory gating to turn the beam on only when the target is in position during the patient’s breathing pattern. In addition, the TrueBeam will allow for the most accurately delivered radiation therapy because if its advanced Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging system, which confirms that the patient is setup exactly how they were on the first day of simulation. During treatment, the patient’s position can be monitored utilizing TrueBeam’s advanced imaging capabilities, allowing Mission Hope’s Radiation Therapists to deliver the most accurate and safest radiation therapy possible.
The TrueBeam linear accelerator will also allow for the fastest radiation oncology treatments available. Treatment times on the TrueBeam will typically be less than 5 minutes. For advanced Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) treatments, TrueBeam can deliver in approximately 10 minutes a treatment that would normally take 45 minutes, thereby increasing patient comfort and reducing patient motion during treatment.
